SXS vs SCS vs PCS: Which Hydrotrope Is Right for Your Formulation?
If you’ve spent any time sourcing or formulating with hydrotropes, you’ve almost certainly come across the same three names: Sodium Xylene Sulphonate (SXS), Sodium Cumene Sulphonate (SCS), and Potassium Cumene Sulphonate (PCS). They’re all aromatic sulphonate hydrotropes. They all improve solubility and phase stability in water-based formulations. And on the surface, they can look interchangeable.
They are not.
Each has a distinct chemistry, a distinct performance profile, and a distinct set of applications where it outperforms the others. Choosing the wrong one — or defaulting to whichever is cheapest without evaluating fit — leads to formulation issues that are often difficult to trace back to the hydrotrope.
This post breaks down the differences clearly, so you can make the right selection the first time.
What They Have in Common
Before the differences, the common ground. SXS, SCS, and PCS are all:
- Aromatic sulphonate salts — built around a sulphonate group attached to an aromatic ring
- Water-soluble — highly compatible with aqueous formulation systems
- Effective hydrotropes — they increase the aqueous solubility of organic compounds through molecular association, not micelle formation
- Low-foaming — unlike surfactants, they contribute minimal foam to formulations
- Compatible with anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants — making them versatile across formulation types
What differs is the aromatic group (xylene vs. cumene), the counterion (sodium vs. potassium), and how these structural differences translate into real formulation performance.
Sodium Xylene Sulphonate (SXS) — AriSulf X
| Chemical Name | Sodium Xylene Sulphonate |
| CAS No. | 1300-72-7 |
| Available as | AriSulf X — 40% liquid, 93% powder |
What makes it different
SXS is built on a xylene aromatic ring — a dimethyl benzene. The two methyl groups give it a slightly different spatial geometry compared to cumene-based hydrotropes, which affects how it interacts with other molecules in solution. SXS is particularly effective at improving optical clarity in liquid formulations and is widely used where a visually clear, stable product is required.
Where SXS performs best
- Liquid laundry detergents — especially where optical clarity and low temperature stability are required
- Dishwash formulations — both household and institutional
- Shampoos and body washes — where clarity and skin compatibility matter
- Textile processing and dyeing — wetting, dye compatibility, dispersion
- Agrochemical formulations — solubilisation and spreading
- Pulp and paper — process chemical compatibility
- Metalworking fluids — aqueous systems requiring phase stability
- Oilfield chemicals — coupling and compatibility functions
- Adhesives — aqueous adhesive system stabilisation
Key strengths
- Excellent optical clarity contribution in liquid systems
- Strong performance in consumer-facing formulations where appearance matters
- Good low-temperature stability
- Effective across a wide pH range
- Available in both liquid (40%) and concentrated powder (93%) formats — the powder format offers flexibility for dry-blend applications
When to choose AriSulf X
Choose SXS when your formulation is consumer-visible (clarity matters), when you are working with liquid detergent or personal care systems, or when your formulation needs to maintain stability across a wide temperature range including cold storage.
Sodium Cumene Sulphonate (SCS) — AriSulf CS
| Chemical Name | Sodium Cumene Sulphonate |
| CAS No. | 28348-53-0 / 15763-76-5 |
| Available as | AriSulf CS — 40% liquid, 93% powder |
What makes it different
SCS is built on a cumene aromatic ring — an isopropyl benzene. The isopropyl side chain makes the molecule slightly bulkier than xylene sulphonate, which gives it stronger performance in high-actives, concentrated formulations where solubilisation demand is greater. SCS is the preferred hydrotrope when active matter concentrations are high and phase stability is the primary concern.
Where SCS performs best
- Concentrated liquid laundry detergents — high active matter systems
- Dishwash concentrates — both household and professional
- Household and industrial cleaners — particularly concentrated formats
- Shampoos and personal care products — high surfactant load systems
- Metal cleaning formulations — alkaline and neutral systems
- Oilfield chemicals — high-concentration formulations
- Agrochemical formulations — solubilisation and emulsion stability
- Textile auxiliaries — process chemical compatibility
- Paints and coatings — aqueous formulation stabilisation
Key strengths
- Superior performance in high-actives, concentrated formulations
- Better phase stability at elevated surfactant concentrations compared to SXS
- Highly effective in alkaline systems
- Available in 93% powder — ideal for customers manufacturing dry-blend or powder detergents
- Widely accepted in personal care formulations globally
When to choose AriSulf CS
Choose SCS when you are formulating concentrated products with high active matter levels, when you need maximum phase stability in a demanding formulation, or when you are producing powder or dry-blend products and need a high-concentration hydrotrope in solid format.
Potassium Cumene Sulphonate (PCS) — AriSulf PC40
| Chemical Name | Potassium Cumene Sulphonate |
| CAS No. | 28085-69-0 |
| Available as | AriSulf PC40 — 40% liquid |
What makes it different
PCS shares the cumene aromatic ring with SCS but uses a potassium counterion instead of sodium. This one change has meaningful formulation implications. Potassium salts generally have higher water solubility than their sodium equivalents, and PCS performs particularly well in alkaline systems, CIP (clean-in-place) formulations, and agrochemical applications where the potassium counterion offers specific advantages.
Where PCS performs best
- Agrochemical formulations — pesticide adjuvant, cloud point depressant, spreading agent
- Liquid detergents — where potassium-based chemistry is preferred
- Alkaline and CIP cleaners — strong stability under alkaline conditions
- Metal cleaning and processing — compatibility with alkaline metal treatment chemistries
- Textile processing — auxiliaries and finishing agents
- Cosmetics and personal care — where potassium salts are preferred over sodium
- Oilfield chemicals — coupling and compatibility functions
Key strengths
- Superior performance in highly alkaline environments (CIP, industrial alkaline cleaners)
- Preferred in agrochemical formulations — the potassium counterion is agronomically compatible
- Better cold water solubility than sodium equivalents in some formulation matrices
- Good compatibility with potassium-based surfactant systems
When to choose AriSulf PC40
Choose PCS when you are formulating agrochemical products where potassium is preferred over sodium, when working with CIP or highly alkaline industrial cleaners, or when your formulation system already uses potassium-based chemistry and compatibility is a concern.

What About Blended Grades?
Beyond the three main grades above, ARIIX Chemicals also offers:
AriSulf PSC40 (Sodium Potassium Cumene Sulphonate) — a blended grade combining both sodium and potassium cumene sulphonate. This gives formulators a single ingredient that delivers the phase stability of SCS with some of the alkaline compatibility benefits of PCS. Used in liquid detergents, CIP cleaners, electroplating, metalworking fluids, textile processing, agrochemical formulations, and personal care.
AriSulf ACS (Ammonium Cumene Sulphonate) — uses an ammonium counterion, which makes it particularly effective as a cloud point depressant and agrochemical adjuvant. Also used as a viscosity reducer, coupling agent, and in coatings and printing inks.
Common Formulation Mistakes
Using SXS in very high-actives concentrates: SXS works well in standard-actives formulations but can underperform in highly concentrated systems where SCS would be the better fit.
Using SCS where potassium compatibility matters: In agrochemical formulations or potassium-surfactant systems, defaulting to SCS (sodium-based) when PCS would be a better chemical fit.
Using the same hydrotrope across all applications: Different product lines often have different hydrotrope requirements. A shampoo, a CIP cleaner, and a crop protection formulation are three different problems — they may well need three different hydrotropes.
Ignoring the powder option: For customers manufacturing dry-blend or powder products, AriSulf CS 93% and AriSulf X 93% powder grades offer significant advantages over adding a liquid hydrotrope to a dry process — but they are often overlooked.
How to Decide: A Quick Guide
Start with your application category:
- Consumer liquid detergent or personal care → AriSulf X (SXS)
- Concentrated or powder detergent → AriSulf CS (SCS)
- Agrochemical formulation → AriSulf PC40 (PCS) or AriSulf ACS
- CIP or alkaline industrial cleaner → AriSulf PC40 (PCS) or AriSulf PSC40
- Metalworking or electroplating → AriSulf PSC40 or AriSulf P65
- Textile processing → AriSulf X (SXS)
- Oilfield chemistry → AriSulf X, AriSulf PSC40, or AriSulf P65
Then consider format:
- Liquid process → 40% liquid grade
- Dry-blend or powder process → 93% powder grade
If you’re still unsure: talk to a formulation chemist. The right hydrotrope is determined by your full formulation matrix — surfactant system, pH, temperature range, active matter level, and end-use requirements. Getting a sample and testing it in your actual system is always the definitive answer.
